SUPERTEST KICKS OFF 2015 SEASON
Craig Lowndes kicked off the 2015 V8 Supercar Championship very positively at the season-opening ‘SuperTest’ at Sydney Motorsport Park on the weekend.
The annual fan day which traditionally opens the season was coined ‘SuperTest’ this year in reference to a new format which saw four test sessions spread over two days, capped by a whole-field flying-lap ‘Shootout’.
Working trackside with his new engineer Grant McPherson for the first time, Craig spent Saturday trying a whole gamut of set-up ideas and experimenting with a different approach to chassis tuning.
“We tried lots of different things during the practice sessions and had the car in a very different place to previously, it was about trying a different tact,” Craig Lowndes explained.
“Most of the ideas worked well and I was very happy with the approach, we just needed to fine tune it a bit more. I am very positive about what we achieved on the weekend.”
Craig ended eighth quickest in the Shootout.
“We only ran new tyres for the Shootout and the car wasn’t quite right (to use them), so we didn’t have the grip we needed to suit the (track) conditions … that’s just a matter of understanding what the chassis set-up needs to make the most of new tyres,” Craig said.
- First laps of 2015
- Three practice sessions
- Day spent trying new chassis set-ups
“We accomplished a lot today, we went through a number of changes. Grant (McPherson) spent the day getting used to the way we operate and our mentality. All in all I think we had a very positive day, we were quite happy with the car at the end. We'll sit down tonight and go through the changes and tomorrow we'll make some further adjustments, but all in all I couldn't be happier. I think we've been able to hit the ground running and Grant's fitted in really well."
- One final practice session
- Craig 9th fastest overall from the four practice sessions
- Craig 8th fastest in the whole field SuperTest Shootout
“I'm still confident, even though we're obviously not fast enough at the moment. The feeling in the car and working with Grant has been fantastic today. We've just improved on everything we found yesterday. I'm confident we're making inroads and obviously taking steps towards making it a faster car and trying to tune it up for qualifying (in the future). I think our race pace will be very good and very competitive. All in all, I'm delighted - we're in good shape and a good position and looking forward to Clipsal."
