SUN SHINES BUT NOT ON CRAIG
The sun shone on Surfers Paradise as usual but the weekend's Gold Coast 600 final endurance event didn't bring any joy for Craig Lowndes and co-driver Steve Richards.
A front-runner on pace throughout the weekend's double-header, the #888 Red Bull Racing Australia Holden Commodore was nevertheless out of the big points both days after dramas.
"One of those weekends we had the speed to get it done but we had dramas and some plain bad luck," Craig Lowndes said.
"It's frustrating but it's done now ... we move onto Phillip Island, should be good for us, I look forward to more reward there."
- Craig 2nd fastest straight out of the box
- Co-driver Richards quickest in middle session
- Race run proves car consistency
"We were really happy with the car setup by the end of the day, it's a very forgiving car which is exactly what you need around this Gold Coast 600 circuit. We managed to get a race run done with Steve (Richards) during the middle of the day which was really beneficial, now overnight we'll be looking to find that little extra something to post our best possible qualifying lap tomorrow."
- Second fastest in Qualifying
- Kerb infringement drops Craig to 10th in Top Ten Shootout
- Clipped trackside tyre bundle, mid-race stop for repairs
Finished a disappointed 18th
"The Gold Coast circuit wasn't too forgiving to us today. I misjudged Turn 2 in the Top Ten Shootout and ran too narrow which activated the electronic beacon on the chicane, which cancelled my lap. It was my mistake and it's a shame because the car was good and then it was even better during the race.
"Unfortunately three-quarters of the way through the race, I pushed too hard and hit a tyre bundle which pushed my front spoiler onto the wheels, so we had to come in for an extended pit stop, leaving us at the back of the pack. I'm confident that we can come back strong tomorrow."
- Craig qualifies 3rd
- Mid-race Safety Car strategy gamble doesn't pay off
- Storming drive back to finish 11th
"We had a great qualifying session today, but when it came to the race, both Steve (Richards) and I struggled with the rear tyre life even though we had really good car speed.
