DUAL TOP TEN FINISHES IN TOWNSVILLE

DUAL TOP TEN FINISHES IN TOWNSVILLE

Craig Lowndes took a pair of top ten finishes in the latest Supercar weekend in Townsville.

Coming from behind in both races after difficult qualifying sessions, Craig drove through the field in each event with a series of strong passing moves.

That, together with great TeamVortex strategies, enabled Craig to bring his Commodore home sixth in Race 13 and 10th in Race 14.

“Both days we had good strategy, good stops, got out in clean air and had some good battles with other people. We managed to get back to the top 10, which was great but for us we’ve just got to try to nail that qualifying,” Craig Lowndes said.

“It was a great effort by the team to bounce back from a bad situation, so I’m really pleased.”

FRIDAY

  • Very warm conditions
  • Craig 4th fastest in Practice 1
  • Craig 21st fastest in Practice 2

“We’ve had a bit of an up and down day. Practice one ended up really well, P4 was nice to get right at the end. In practice two we opted to try more of a race run and some other things. Some worked, some didn’t quite work, so we’ll obviously analyse that. I’m a little disappointed to finish 21st at the end of practice two, but all in all we have learned a lot today. That’s something we’ll take out of it and put it into qualifying tomorrow, which is obviously the important one. It was a good learning day, now we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

SATURDAY

  • Craig qualifies 19th for Race 13
  • Craig storms through the field to 6th in Race 13

“For qualifying we went with the setup we thought would work but we had too much understeer at the beginning. We had three runs and for the second run we made an adjustment. It did help, but it still wasn’t enough, so we made a spring change for the last run, which unfortunately took us one step too much and unbalanced the car.

“Starting 19th it was a case of staying out of trouble. It’s obviously very easy to get caught up in the middle of the pack. The car itself had great pace and tyre life, we were able to be very consistent. Although I think our outright speed probably wasn’t fast enough, our consistency was definitely good enough. We’re really pleased with what we did, our strategy was perfect and we had good tyre life to run long in the first stint, then shorten the second two up. We made some passes today, which is even better, it showed that the car had some good speed, but obviously we’ve got to work on qualifying for tomorrow.”

SUNDAY

  • Craig qualifies 21st for Race 14
  • Craig drives through the field to 10th

“Obviously qualifying didn’t go to plan. We tried a new setup, trying to learn from yesterday. We thought it would have been a positive move forward, but unfortunately it was a negative. Starting further back than yesterday was always going to be a challenge. We had a great start, our race trim has always been great this year, as we proved again today.”
