CRAIG CLOSES THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAP
CRAIG LOWNDES continued his charge toward the 2015 V8 Supercar Championship at the penultimate weekend at Phillip Island.
Trailing leader Mark Winterbottom by 240 points coming into the weekend, Craig scored two wins and a third across the three races, to whittle down the Ford man’s lead to just 179 points with only the final Homebush event to go.
“The day was fantastic, it’s probably our best ever weekend here,” a delighted Lowndes said afterwards.
“I’d hoped to close the Championship down to something like the gap we’ve got now, so that’s pleasing. We won’t stop fighting (for the Championship) until it’s all over.”
- Wet & windy conditions throughout the day
- Track conditions varied
- Craig fifth fastest in second session
“The rain interrupted our program a bit today, but at the same token we actually got some valuable wet weather running in. We didn’t lose the whole day and we able to utilise some of it. In the end I’m actually quite happy with the car. Both wet or dry we’ve got a handle on the setups come tomorrow and Sunday. Really for us it was an encouraging day and I think the car is working reasonably well. There’s some things we’d liked to have finished today, but we’ve got another practice session tomorrow to finalise all that, but where we are at I’m really happy.”
- Dry but cool conditions
- Craig 10th quickest in final practice session
- Craig qualifies 3rd for Races 31 & 32
- Craig wins Race 31
- Craig finishes 3rd in Race 32
“It’s been a cracking weekend so far, we couldn’t have wished for much more. I had a good qualifying run and to have two third position starts was positive. To have the first race win was a little bit unexpected, to be honest, we had a ripper start and we tried to repeat it in race two. I didn’t quite get the drive that I wanted, but still having a third in that second race was great for points and we’re really looking forward to what tomorrow brings.”
- Craig 4th quickest in final practice
- Craig qualifies 2nd for Race 33
- Craig wins Race 33, his 103rd Championship win
“We rolled the cars out of the truck pretty strongly but I was chasing the rear a bit earlier in the weekend. Today, though, the car was really good. I didn’t make a great start but even on our older tyres we could stay with the front pace, and once we got onto the fresh rubber we were away.
“The car was great today and the strategy perfect … it’s a great outcome for the team.”
