CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE CONSOLIDATED IN WA
Craig Lowndes enjoyed a strong weekend of points consolidation in his chase for the 2015 V8 Supercar Championship title, at the Barbagallo Raceway in Perth over the weekend.
Out-paced by the PRA Fords, Craig ran strongly in Saturday's two shorter sprint races in score a third and a fifth, then in Sunday's longer event looked set to score an historic 100th Championship race victory with just a handful of laps to run.
But ultimately he didn't quite have the tyre life and had to settle for second, passed for the lead almost within sight of the chequered flag.
"It's been a good day. Having a podium finish was obviously fantastic given where we started in sixth, so for us it was a good end to the weekend," Craig Lowndes said.
"The car was responding really well with the soft tyre (in the final race). I wasn't pushing the car, I was just looking after the tyre, but with five laps to go I lost the rear tyres completely and just had nothing to fight with.
"It was a bit of a shame, but we got a lot of confidence from today. We've got a little bit of work to do, but we're looking forward to Winton, which should be good for us."
- Fine, sunny conditions
- 2nd quickest in morning session
- 16th fastest in afternoon session
"We made good progress today. Practice One was obviously good, being in second position at the end of it was encouraging as the car was working well. We tried a combination of the soft and the hard tyres and tried the same again for second practice. We matched our hard tyre pace, but didn't quite match the soft tyre pace. That's something we can work on, but all in all the car's balance was really nice. I know we're a little bit further down the time sheet, but I'm actually pretty happy with what we've achieved. We were just searching for a balanced car and I think we've got it."

"In the first race today the car was good, though we still needed to find some pace. Those PRA cars were just too strong. But in the second race I was a little disappointed, we just didn't have the race pace, basically it was a lack of grip, the tyres felt greasy everywhere. I'm looking forward to tomorrow now, it's a mix of compounds and that might suit us better."

"The car was really good at the beginning and our second set of hard tyres was better, I think that that's where we made our time up having that good run in the middle of the race.
"I did what I could but lost all speed when the rear tyres went … there was nothing I could do then."
