CAUGHT MID PACK AT THE GRAND PRIX
Four short sprint races at the weekend’s Australian Grand Prix meeting in Melbourne saw Craig Lowndes score a trio of mid-pack finishes before being taken out in a first corner accident in the final race.
“It was a frustrating weekend for us … we didn’t quite get it right in qualifying and ended up mid pack, and then spent the whole weekend there because the races were so short it was almost impossible to pass,” Craig Lowndes said.
“All the races were very processional for that reason … everyone is so evenly matched it’s very difficult to pass or make progress.
“Tasmania in two weeks will be good. We had a strong run there last year, so I'm looking forward to getting back there and see what we can do."
- Overcast conditions
- Two practice sessions, one Qualifiying
- Craig qualifies 13th
"I think we're still finding our footing. The car wasn't perfect in qualifying. We made an error in that last run, which made the car too nervous, but up until then the car balance wasn't too bad, so we induced our own issue a little bit towards the end. They're only 12 lap races, so we'll have to come up with a plan and see where we end up."
- Race 1 Craig finishes 9th
- Race 2 Craig finishes 10th
"We made some more changes over the break between race one and race two, which gave us the feeling we needed. We needed more turn, more drive off the corner, which the boys were able to do. We were stuck in a bit of traffic for most of the races, which is always difficult around here. We made steps forward with the car balance and speed, but of course we start the race tomorrow in the accumulated points position. Overall we're really happy with the progression we've made with the car."
- Race 3 Craig finishes 10th
"We made some changes overnight, but the car wasn't as nice today. We're still learning and I think that our early pace was reasonably good, but it faded away a little bit faster today than in the last two races. I feel that the car is getting better, we're just stuck in mid pack. It's a matter of getting some clean air and of course it's always difficult to pass around here in the 12 laps. That's the first race we've had without a safety car, so it gives us a better idea of how the car's running."
- Race 4 Craig taken out in 1st corner accident
"It was a very short and sharp race for us. We got caught up in the starting procedure and into turn one got tagged from the back. We got spun around, which wasn't so bad, but then unfortunately Jason Bright got caught up with the whole thing and that was the end of the race for us. We damaged the car enough and being a short race there was no point fixing it, but we live to fight another day.”
